Home Smart Home

Thursday, December 6, 15:15-16:15h

Home Smart Home; use design fiction to discuss the future

What is the influence of smart home devices on our personal lives? VPRO Medialab launched the multimedia project Home Smart Home during Dutch Design Week 2018 in Eindhoven.

One in six Americans has a smart speaker in their home. The Dutch version of Google Home will enter Dutch households at the end of this year. In addition, more and more ordinary household devices (your vacuum cleaner, fridge, thermostat) are becoming ‘smart’. These devices make life easier, but they also simultaneously record, exchange and send all our data to large companies. Do these devices simply carry out our wishes, or do they also have an influence on our behaviour, relationships and identities? And: what role can they play in stories?

VPRO Medialab has researched these questions over the past year. The result is a special multimedia project, Home Smart Home, that was launched during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

Home Smart Home shorts: three short films MAYA, RITA and ALEX

VPRO Medialab wants to make the possible consequences of living with smart devices palpable for the wider public. It therefore asked young filmmakers to visualise possible scenarios in three short films.

During this session the videos (6 min each) will be shown and discussed with three of our keynote speakers and the audience.

Annelies Termeer

Concept developer, curator and creative project lead on the cross section of tech, media and art. She favors projects that are a little bit crazy, but always keep the experience of the visitor/user at the centre of their thinking.

Since 2018 Annelies Termeer is editor in chief at VPRO Medialab. Annelies Termeer has been involved in the projects from the beginning of VPRO Medialab in 2015. She was project leader for Hackathons,  weknowhowyoufeel.nu (the online part of We Know How You Feel during the DDW 2017) and Home Smart Home. This last project, which is central in 2018, focuses on the Internet of Things. With Home Smart Home, VPRO Medialab wants to explore the possibilities of storytelling in, around and with a ‘smart home’. Furthermore, the project also wants to contribute to awareness around the Internet of Things.
