In 2034, Schiphol Transforms into a “Work-Shopping Mall”
By 2034, traditional jet-fuel-powered planes and long-haul flights will be a rarity. Schiphol will transform into a dynamic hub for autonomous electric transportation, serving as a nexus for autonomous air vehicles, self-driving cars, and robots of various sizes and functions. This evolution, however, won’t be limited to transportation alone. Schiphol will reimagine itself as a centre for interactive work spaces—”work-shops” instead of traditional shops—where humans and robots collaborate to offer an array of on-the-spot services.
These “work-shops” will take on diverse roles, blending familiar services with innovative elements and introducing experiences that have no current parallel. Some work-shops will expand upon KLM’s current repair services, enabling human-robot teams to maintain and service a wide array of autonomous vehicles, including air taxis, drones, KLM’s fleet of autonomous land-based taxis, and various smaller robotic devices. Nextdoor, healthcare work-shops will cater to an array of needs, offering services from dental implants and plastic surgery to mental health support, all facilitated through a human-robot synergy.
Schiphol’s reimagined identity will position it as a hub for pioneering human-robot collaborations, fostering vibrant communities that span far beyond the hub itself. These new partnerships and relationships between humans and robots promise to create opportunities and complexities that extend beyond our current understanding. This assignment invited the student teams to prototype experiences that illuminate the potentials, risks, and nuances of these interconnected human-robot communities.
About Interactive Environments
The Interactive Environments Minor of TU Delft faculty of Industrial Design Engineering explores the possibilities for dynamic, interactive spaces in which people and buildings engage in a mutual relationship. By connecting data and experiences that develop through this relationship, the built environment becomes an interactive, adaptive and animate entity.
