Energy Ecosystem Community

From a ‘Marineterrein Company Park’ to an ‘Marineterrein Energy Ecosystem Community’

At Amsterdam’s Marineterrein, dozens of innovative organisations share one compact campus – along with more than a thousand solar panels, EV chargers, e-boats, offices, hospitality venues and public spaces. Yet like many urban districts, the area now faces grid congestion and the urgent need to decarbonise mobility and buildings while keeping the site livable and future-proof. The Marineterrein-Hub initiative explores how to connect these scattered assets – solar, battery storage, EV charging, e-boats and a zero-emission generator – into a shared, near CO₂-neutral energy and mobility system that can serve as a blueprint for other mixed-use areas in Amsterdam and beyond.

In this workshop, Hugo Niesing takes participants from the idea of a “company park” to the vision of an energy ecosystem community. They will briefly introduce the current initiative and its technical and social building blocks: participation of local stakeholders, modelling of current and future energy use, metering and sensing, and integration with the grid and campus assets. They will also share the upcoming student inventory and modelling work (Nov ’25–Feb ’26) as a living example. Together with representatives from Marineterrein organisations, participants will then work hands-on: mapping useful tech tools, identifying partners on and beyond the site, and generating new ideas and next steps for a truly shared energy ecosystem.

Host – Hugo Niesing

Hugo Niesing is the founder and CEO of Resourcefully. He lives on his houseboat since 1989, the first 7 years without water, gas and electricity.
That’s when his energy ambition accelerated.
Realising as much as possible with the local resources at your disposal by adaptation and storage is the challenge he has been working on afterwards.

This resulted in the creation of Resourcefully, one of the first companies fully focused on the smart integration of renewable energy, flexible consumption and e-mobility for Europe’s city transition.
In 2013 he was main driver of the first vehicle to grid solution in The Netherlands and forecasted grid congestion problems.

Concrete actual projects focus on the flexible integration of renewable energy for electric mobility and heating, avoiding grid congestion and applying smart solutions, such as the EU-funded project RESCHOOL, by setting up a flexible, self-supporting energy community in the FlexCitizen energy system in Amsterdam.
